What makes a good architectural design?

In my point of view, a good architectural design have to be creative, like the picture on the top. The cross-section of the house, as shown above, is creative in a way that when the design thinks: "OMG, i need more space, but building it on top takes too much space and money, so why not use natural foundation?" This kind of under-ground houses that you see above ground is just the tip of the ice-berg, compared to the space underground. However, the flaw is that the residents have to go above ground to get sunlight, and most of their house is lightened by artificial light. Also, in the event of an disaster, the residents living at the bottom floor would have a hard time getting out and risk the roof collapsing on them.
